A Sherlock Holmes is considered by many people as the greatest detective in fictional literature. He is, in fact, more famous than his own creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the popular series of stories, Holmes is described as "tall and lean, pipe-smoking, always in his cape (披肩) and speaks in a splendid manner". Doyle gave Holmes' address as 221-B Baker Street, London, and to this day some visitors to London still go to Baker Street to search for 221-B. Of course, there never was really any such address. Holmes' flat was supposed to be shared by the lovable, but sometimes clumsy (笨拙的) Dr Watson who went around with Holmes trying to solve crimes before Holmes did. Poor Dr Watson lost out to Holms every time. Doyle gave Holmes a masterly skill of deduction (推论)—the ability to come up with interesting conclusion from the simplest clues (线索) found at the scene of a crime. Doyle said that the description of Holmes was modeled on one of his lecturers at Edinburgh University where he studied medicine. That man was Dr Joseph Bell. Sherlock Holmes first appeared in Doyle's A Study in Scarlet published in 1887. Holmes was so loved by all that when his author killed him off in one of his stories, readers wrote in anger to complain (抱怨). They refused to allow Holmes to die! Holmes was brought back to "life" and appeared in further stories. The stories of Sherlock Holmes have been reprinted many times ever since then. Today we can watch Holmes at work on cinema and television screens as well as on stage. 1.Sherlock Holmes was ______. A. the greatest detective who ever lived B. Dr Joseph Bell C. A. could not write any more stories of Holmes B. killed Dr Watson off in his stories C. became more famous than Holmes D. put Holmes to death in one of his stories B In 1966, a dead author of detective stories saved the life of a 19-month-old baby in a most unusual way. The author was Agatha Christie, a gentle married lady and one of the most successful writers of detective stories in the world. In June 1977, a baby girl became seriously ill in Qatar, near Saudi Arabia. Doctors were unable to diagnose the cause of her illness with confidence, so she was flown to London and admitted to Hammersmith Hospital, where specialist help was available. She was then only semi-conscious and on the "Dangerously Ill" list. A team of doctors hurried to examine the baby only to discover that they, too, were baffled by the very unusual symptoms. While they were discussing the baby's case, a nurse asked to speak to them. "Excuse me," said Nurse Marsha Maitland, "but I think the baby is suffering from thallium poisoning." "What makes you think that?" Dr. Brown asked. "Thallium poisoning is extremely rare." "A few days ago. I was reading a novel called A Pale Horse by Agatha Christie," Nurse Maitland explained. "In the book, somebody uses thallium poison, and all the symptoms are described. They're exactly the same as the baby's." "You're very observant and you may be right," another doctor said. "We'll carry out some tests and find out whether it's thallium or not." The tests showed that the baby had indeed been poisoned by thallium, a rare metallic substance used in making optical glass. Once they knew the cause of illness, the doctors were able to give the baby the correct treatment. She soon recovered and was sent back to Qatar. Enquiries revealed that the poison might have come from an insecticide used in Qatar. 6. Who first suggested the correct cause of the baby's illness? A. A doctor in Qatar. B. Nurse Maitland. C. Dr. Brown. D. Agatha Christie. 7. Why was the baby sent to London? A. Because she was a British girl whose parent were working in Qatar. B. Because the hospitals in Qatar were full at that time. C. Because she was the daughter of a doctor in one of the hospitals in London. D. Because the Qatar doctors were not sure they could cure her. 8. According to the passage, what caused the baby's illness? A. Contact with a pair of infected spectacles. B. Contact with a harmful substance used to kill insects. C. Contact with machinery used in manufacturing optical glass. D. Contact with her mother who carried thallium germs in her body. 9. When the baby was first admitted to hospital in the U.K., what did the doctors think of her case? A. They thought it was an urgent one. B. They thought it was a matter of normal medical tests. C. They thought it was quite a simple one. D. They thought it was the result of thallium poisoning. 10. Nurse Maitland spoke to the doctors ______.
